The Ministry of Sport in Trinidad and Tobago launched their “Innovative New Website”, on May 15th, 2013. It is arguably the best government website in Trinidad and Tobago in terms of design.

Sport.gov.tt is the newest addition to the arsenal of websites under the belt of the Trinidad and Tobago (TnT) government. It was given a launch event at the Hasely Crawford Stadium where only specially invited guests were able to attend. Before I continue, I would like to say that I’ll try my best to behave when writing this post and also that I am a bit excited because finally we can see some gradual progress for web design in Trinidad and Tobago.

Design

The website, which was designed by the Information Technology Department of  the Ministry, is built on Joomla. It features information on athletes, current sporting events, videos, courses, funding initiatives, facilities and quite a host of other forms of information. The design of the website follows the national colors of the flag; red, black and white. The website features a top navigation, 2 row content and a large footer. It has a good use of font choices with good sizes. Lastly, the website is a modified version of the template Game News.

Functionality

An impressive aspect of the website is that it is responsive. I know that responsive websites are a ‘norm’ these days; but if I am not mistaken, this is a first for the TnT government.

One of the errors I encountered with the website is the text resize button. It seems to not be 100% functional; it only really works on links. Another issue is the fact that when the font is resized, it doesn’t remain at that size. In short, you need to resize text for every new page you go to.

Conclusion

It is good to see a positive movement and a great step in the right direction for websites in Trinidad. It is even better to see the government also internally taking their own steps.
